A finned fuel element is designed with flat transverse fins and deflector members inclined to the coolant flow. Apertures are provided in some of the flns for interconnecting the channels between adjacent fins and thus reducing the pressure loss. The deflector members are in the form of triangular vanes secured to longitudinal backbones fixed to the fin peripheries. The fuel elemert is a modification of the fuel element described in British Patent 955,426. (D.L.C.)
