Methods for Performance Testing of Respiratory Protective Equipment

A program is described for the evaluation of performance characteristics of respiratory protective devices which may be used normally for radiological protection. Leakage in the equipment or the fit of the facepieces may be pinpointed by these tests. Limitations of the field of vision and the effects of cold are measured. The greatest problem of leakage in devices tested was the fit of the nosecup. Some masks limited the field of vision sufficiently to create potential hazards. Inhalation and exhalation valves operated satisfactorily at temperatures as low as 0 deg F. Antifog chemicals will prevent fogging of lenses, but will not prevent frosting.
