STUDIES ON THE IRRADIATION OF HIGH POLYMERS AT HIGH TEMPERATURES. III. THE GEL FORMATION OF UNPLASTICIZED POLY(VINYL CHLORIDE) CONTAINING POLYFUNCTIONAL MONOMERS BY IRRADIATION
Test results obtained from the irradiation of unplasticized PVC films by gamma rays from a 1000-c Co/sup 60/ source and by a Van de Graaff accelerator in the temperature range of 30 to 120 deg C are discussed. Gel formation was not observed - when the films were irradiated up to 30 Mr in air at 30 deg C, but it formed a dosage of 22 Mr in vacuo. The tendency to cross-linking increased with increasing temperature. The G-values of cross-linking in vacuo at 30, 70, 90, and 120 deg C were 0.12, 0.49, 1.9, and 2.4, respectively. A marked increase in G was observed above the glass transition tem perature. The intrinsic viscosity of the sol part in vacuo increased with dosage to a maximum value and then fell off, but it decreased in air between 30 and 70 deg C. In similar studies on samples containing a small amount of glycol, dimethylacrylate or triallyl cyanurate considerable discoloration was observed only at high temperatures. Very little discoloration was observed in the case of radiationinduced cross- linking of PVC containing a polyfunctional monomer. (OID)
