SERVICING MECHANISM FOR GAS COOLED NUCLEAR REACTORS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4776629
A servicing or fuel handling mechanism includes a rotatable charge tube adapted to be inserted into the pressure vessel for servicing a group of reactor channels. This tube has an articulated radial end portion adapted to engage the ends of the channels in sequence when the charge tube is rotated. A charge chute encloses the charge tube and shows at its lower portion a lateral axial slot through which the articulated radial end portion may swivel out. Within the lower portion of the charge chute an axially movable member is positioned having a locating spigot at its lower end adapted to engage in a locating aperture in a guide pan above the reactor core. The axial position of the axially movable member is controlled by sensing means in the form of pegs mounted on the guide pan and dependent on the azimuthal position of the charge chute. The upper end of the axially movable member has a can surface providing two stepped portions which engage a follower on the radially articulated end portion of the charge tube, so that this end portion can have one of two radial positions depending upon the azi-muthal position of the charge chute.
