>In constrast to previous negative results in rats, the submaxillary and sublingual glands (but not the parotids) of A2G mice have the property of concentrating I/sup 131/. There is a marked sexual difference in the concentration of I/sup 131/ by submaxillary glands, this ability being greater in males than in females; this coincides with the greater height of the male alveolar ducts. In male animals, castration decreased the concentration of I/sup 131/ when sufficient time was allowed to elapse after operation for atrophy of the submaxillary glands to attain 20%, Castration does not reduce the concentration of I/sup 131/ by submaxillary glands in females. Injection of testosterone propionate greatly increased the concentration of I/sup 131/ by submaxillary glands in castrated mice. However, the estradiol benzoate and dipropionate did not alter this concentration. There is an evident parallelism between the height of the epithelium of the alveolar ducts and the concentration of I/sup 131/ by the submaxillary glands, which suggests the role of this epithelium in the concentration of I/sup 131/. It is apparently selectively taken up from plasma by epithelial cells by active transport. (H.H.D.)
