ON AN INCREASE OF THE RADIOPROTECTIVE ACTION OF S-$beta$- AMINOETHYLISOTHIURONIUM. HBr BY DIMETHYLSULFOXIDE (in German)

The survival rate and survival time were determined in mice irradiated with whole-body doses of 1000 and 1300 r, respectively, and treated with S- BETA - aminoethylisothiuronium bromide (AET), with and without dimethylsulfoxide. In irradiated untreated mice receiving 1000 r, all animals were dead by the 12th postirradiation day. In mice pretreated with 6 mg. AET, deg 25% survived beyond the 3Oth day, and when 95 mg. dimethylsulfoxide was given with the same amount of AET the 30-day survival rate exceeded 50%. In mice irradiated with 1300 r and given both compounds the mean survival time was 13 days compared with 9 days in rats given AET alone. Half these doses of both compounds were also effective but to a lesser extent. The promoting effect of dimethylsulfoxide on the radioprotective action of AE T probably doe s not involve chemical interaction between the 2 compounds. However, since dimethylsulfoxide is a good solvent medium, it may ensure a better distribution of AET throughout the body and thus enhance its protective action. (H.H.D.)
