RESULTS OF A PRENATAL WHOLE-BODY ROENTGEN IRRADIATION ON THE HEMATOPOIESIS OF YOUNG RATS (in German)
A study was made of 360 young animals born at the normal time after whole body x irradiation of 42 pregnant Albino rats (on the 18th day of pregnancy) with 270 r. Almost half of the newborn died within the first week as a result of the radiation syndrome. Hemoglobin, number of erythrocytes, leukocytes, and thrombocytes were determined in 175 young animals during the period of development, and smears of blood and bone marrow were differentiated. The blood cell count dropped to minimal values on the 4th and 8th day of life (8 to 12 days after irradiation). Regenerative events in the bone marrow started on the 3rd day of life, in the blood on the 8th to 10th day of life. The average values of normal young animals at the same age (except the peripheral granulocytes and lymphocytes counts) were reached by the survivors by the second half of the first month. Furthermore, the erythrocytes showed an excessive regeneration with a peak on the 50th day of life. It was observed that survivlng young animals show a . good regeneration abllity of the hematopoietic system, which possibly may be superior to the one of the adult animals. (auth)
