A device is designed for removing, from a reactor, damaged fuel rods, sheaths, or control rods. The device comprises a heavy cylindrical body provided at the bottom with three vertical fingers, each of which has a recess with a ball on its face contacting the element to be removed. In operation, the fingers are lowered into the space between a fuel rod and its graphite sheath and then raised, whereby the balls are wedged between the recesses and the rod and/ or sheath, thereby forming a gripping surface.
