DIFFERENCES OF LETHAL EFFECTS BETWEEN NEUTRON AND X-RAY SINGLE EXPOSURE ON MICE (in Japanese)

The effects of 14.1-Mev neutrons from the T(d,n) reaction (330 to 600 rads) and x radiation (190 to 760 rads) on the survival rate and the weight loss of mice were compared. The largest numbers of deaths occurred about 15 days after the treatment in the x-irradiated group and 10 days after exposure in the neutron-treated group. The body weight of both groups of irradiated mice decreased; the neutrontreated animals showed a more pronounced decrease 5 days after exposure, but a secondary decrease in the body weight of the x-irradiated jice occurred 10 days after the treatment; this secondary weight loss was not noticed in the neutron-treated group. The relative biological effectiveness for neutrons based on LD/sub 50/ for 30 days was 1.0 to 1.5. (TTT)
