In an evaluation of the time it will take for nuclear propulsion to become economically competitive, the quantitative importance of the factors conditioning the economy of nuclear chips is first determined. An attempt was then made to predict marine reactor development as a function of technological progress. The evaluation was made using a tanker of 64,000 dwt, traveling 15,000 miles at a speed of 18 knots. The PWR was the power source. For the ship study it was shown that the use of nuclear propulsion increases the cargo space by 9.25%. It was shown that the date of actual competition from nuclear ships is a function of two independent variables--the annual increase of the price of conventional fuel and the length of the route traveled.
