NUCLEAR PROPULSION FOR MERCHANT SHIPS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4256101
Views arising from the British Shipbuilding Research Association studies on the possible application of nuclear propulsion to merchant ships are presented. The capital cost of nuclear reactors is much higher than that of oil-fired boilers and for this and other reasons the first commercial application of nuclear power will possibly be to a large oil tanker. In order to assess the relative importance of direct fuel cost, capital cost, and machinery weight the results of an economic study of tanker operation are given. The question as to whether the economic speed of large tankers would be increased by the adoption of nuclear propulsion is discussed. Various types of reactors are compared. (W.D.M.)
