Application of nuclear propulsion to the merchant fleet is determined by greater economical effects. Some types of ships are discussed which offer the greatest economical promise when nuclear propulsion is used. General characteristics of the most adequate reactors to install in the ship are presented. The weights of conventional and nuclear power plants are compared together with expected economical effects. Finally, an efficiency comparison is made for both kinds of propulsion in a tanker. (auth)
