THE ROLE OF AN ADDITIVE IN REDUCING NETWORK FORMATION ON IRRADIATION OF RUBBER

Journal Article · · J. Polymer Sci., Pt. B

A sample of high-molecular-weight rubber was used in order to study radioinduced gelation in the presence of nitrobenzene. The sample was irradiated with 4-Mev electrons, and the data were plotted on a s /sup 3/2/ vs 1/R graph. It is concluded that nitrobenzene suppresses approximates 40% of the crosslinks; the previously reported high value of 70% is believed to include network destruction due to increased chain fracture in the presence of the additive.
