Gel Formation in Polyvinyl Chloride on Irradiation

The probable mechanism of crosslinking of polyvinyl chloride is discussed. A plot of log sol fraction vs dose for radioinduced gelation of polyvinyl chloride shows that the powdered samples gel at lower doses than film samples. A comparison of gelling doses with and without unsaturated additives suggests that the chain mechanism requires radiolytic formation of unsaturation. Heating of polyvinyl chloride to 50 deg C in vacuum after irradiation results in increased gelation and evolution of hydrochloric acid; this increase is probably due to an increase in unsaturation from the thermal treatment.
