THE INFLUENCE OF MOLECULAR WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION ON THE SOLUBILITY ANALYSIS OF IRRADIATED RUBBER

A polymer with an average of u units/molecule gives a sol fraction s after a radiation dose R which may be related to the probabilities of fracture (p) or crosslinking (q) per unit dose by the equation: s/sub 3/2/ = pq/sup -1/ + (quR)/sup -1/ Results are reported for rubber whose molecular weight was randomized by thermal oxidation prior to irradiation by 4-Mev electrons. The data, plotted on a s/sub 3/2/ vs 1/R graph, agrees with the equation at higher doses, whereas the data for a nonrandomized sample does not. (D.L.C.)
