THE EFFECT OF HIGH ENERGY RADIATION ON NATURAL AND SOME SYNTHETIC RUBBERS. Preliminary Report

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4199960
The effects of radiation on the properties of natural rubber, butadiene- styrene rubber, Neoprene, butadieneacrylonitrile rubber, silicone rubber, and butyl rubber were investigated. The use of high-energy radiation to cross-link rubber is discussed. The production of styrenebutadiene copolymers in the approximate ratio of 1:3 by radiation is reviewed. The mechanism of radiation crosslinking of polyethylene was studied. Specifications are given for a Co/sup 60/ irradiation unit. (W.L.H.)
