It was found previously that symparthectomy increases the sensitivity of rabbits to whole-body irradiation of 1000 r for a period of about 2 weeks after the exposure. This behavior was more closely eximined by means of an electroencephalograph. Electrodes were introduced in the brain cortex and the hypothaiamic region of the rabbits, removing subsequently the upper sympathetic ganglions and exposing the animals to 1000 r of x radiation at a rate of 39.8 r/ min. The electrophysiological data thus obtained were correlated with the survival rate and other processes. Irreversible charges were noted in the electroencephalograms in the form of a persisting depreasion of the biocurrent; similar observations were also noted in several irradiated animals not subjected to sympathectomy. A group of animals was intraperitoneally injected with mercamine at a rate of 150 mg/kg 30 minutes before the irradiation; some of these animals did not exhibit the pathological changes in the encephalogram. It is concluded from the data that this sympathetic nervous system plays a role in the chemical protection against radiation because when the animals were sympathectomized, the protective effect was not observed.
