ELECTROENCEPHALOGRAPHIC FINDINGS IN MAMMALS AFTER ROENTGEN IRRADIATION (in German)

Previous studies indicated that, with the exception of the cerebral cortex, the central nervous system shows litile change in electrical activity after exposure to ionizing radiation at doses below 2000 r. However, it was possible to show that in cats with stereotactically implanted electrodes, relatively small doses of x rays (200 and 400 r at 40 and 110 r/min) elicit changes in subcortical bioelectric activity. These doses produced only slight general symptoms of radiation sickness and no neurologic symptoms. Changes in the electroencephalogram are manifested by spike discharges appearing within an hour of exposure and disappearing after several days. Such changes could be elicited in welldefined regions such as the horn of Ammon in the hippocampus after wholebody or head irradiation. The spike discharges reached max intensity within 3 to 7 hr postexposure, and the hippocampus activity could be detected for as long as 10 to 14 days afterward. It was more intense when the animals were asleep and was attenuated by their awakening. Similar results were obtained in rabbits. (BBB)
