THE ELASTIC SCATTERING OF DEUTERONS BY OXYGEN SIXTEEN (thesis)

The absolute differential cross sections for the elastic scattering of deuterons by O/sup 16/ were measured at deuteron energies from 0.65 Mev to 1.65 Mev at 90 deg , from 0.65 Mev to 1.85 Mev at 125.3 deg and 140.8 deg , and from 0.65 Mev to 2.1 Mev at 166.2 deg . Apparatus is described, and the cross sections obtained are displayed and compared with the Rutherford cross section. Sources of possible errors are discussed, and two checks for large systematic errors are described. The He/sup 4/(d,d)He/sup 4/and the Ar/sup 40/(d,d)Ar/sup 40 cross sections were measured, and the good agreement with the Rutherford cross sections indicates such errors are absent. (D.C.W.)
