The differential cross section for deuteron-nucleus elastic scattering was measured for N, 0, Ne, Mg, Al, S, Ar, Ca. Cr, Fe, Ni, Cu, Kr, Ag, Xe, and Au at the deuteron energy of 11.2 Mev. Measurements were done at 5 deg intervals from 15 deg to 165 deg with relative uncertainty of 3 to 5%. The measured cross sections show a pronounced diffraction pattern in light and medium weight nuclei, but the cross sections/or heavier elements show a smooth decrease and are smaller than the Rutherford cross sections. The cross sections of deuterons leading to the first excited state of Ne/sup 20/ and Mg/sup 24/ by inelastic scattering were obtained. However, inelastically scattered deuterons could not be detected in other elements. The angular distributions for Ne/sup 20/ and Mg/ sup 24/ are explained by the direct nuclear process. (auth)
