X-ray diffraction, microstructure, thermal, and durametric analyses of 21 specimens of electrolytic iron and iodide zirconium showed two-peaks for alloys with 30% Zr as 1320 and 1325 deg C (eutectic melting and liquidus point). Another peak was found for alloys with more than 30% Zr at 1480 deg C. Microstructure studies revealed a two-phase structure for alloys with less than 30% Zr, single-phase for 30 to 34% Zr, and again two-phase for alloys with more than 34% Zr; both phases had identical microhardness corresponding to the intermetallic epsilon '. A new intermediate n phase was studied, and changes in the 35 to 50% Zr epsilon ' phase lattice parameters were analyzed. (R.V.J.)
