MECHANISM OF THE C$sup 12$(p,p'3$alpha$) REACTION FOR PROTON ENERGIES OF 15 TO 29 Mev

The C/sup 12/(p p'3 alpha ) reaction is investigated for proton energies of 15 to 29 Mev. The reaction is studied by fivepronged stars produced in photoplates irradiated in a synchrotron. Energy distiibutions of the decay products and excitation energies of possible intermediate nuclei C/sup 12/, B/sup 9/ and Be/sup 8/ are given. The experimental data warrant the conclusion that the principal mechanism for the reaction under investigation is the decay of the system N/sup 13/ into three alpha -particles and the proton with resonance interaction of the products at the levels of Be/sup 8/ and Li/sup 5/.
