INVESTIGATION OF DISINTEGRAITONS OF CARBON AND OXYGEN NUCLEI INDUCED BY 15- 29 Mev PROTONS

The disintegration of C/sup 12/ and O/sup 16/ nuclei into alpha particles induced by protons with energies between 15 and 29 Mev is investigated by the photographic emulsion technique. The energy distributions of the decay products produced in the reactions C/sup 12/(p,p'3 alpha ) and O/sup 16/(p,p'4 alpha ) are obtained as well as the excitation energies of the intermediate nuclei C/sup 12/, B/sup 9/, and Be/sup 8/ possibly produced in the C/sup 12/ (p,p'3 alpha ) reactions. An analysis of the experimental data indicates that the main mechanism of the investigated reactions is disintegration of the N/sup 13/ system (in the case of the C/sup 12/(p,p'3 alpha ) reaction) and of the F/sup 17/ system (in the case of the C/sup 12 (p,p'4 alpha ) reaction) into alpha particles and a proton with their paired resonance interaction in the energy states of the Be/sup 8/ and Li/sup 5/ nuclei.
