LEUKEMIAS INDUCED IN RATS BY EXTRACTS FROM HUMAN LEUKEMIC TISSUE

Journal Article · · Neoplasma (Czechoslovakia)
OSTI ID:4740024
Saline extracts of organs of patients dying of leukemia were injected in 1- to 6-day-old rats, some of which were x irradiated or treated with cortisone. Leukemia developed in 11% of 205 injected untreated rats, after an average latent period of 17 months. None of 225 rats injected with heated extracts or tissue extracts of normal patients developed leukemia. Rats injected with leukemic extracts and irradiated with 2 doses of 100 r each given 1 week apart or one 150- r dose showed a higher incidence of leukemia (19%, after an average latent period of 11 months). Injected, cortisone-treated rats showed an incidence of 14% and latent period of 15 months. Irradiation or cortisone treatment alone did not induce leukemia. The leukemia was of the myeloid type, and reticulosis was most prevalent in the irradiated group. Subcutaneous sarcoma and reticulosarcoma of liver were also frequently noted. (H.H.D.)
