Glomerular capillary dilation occurred after one dose of endotoxin in rabbits prepared with Thorotrast (colloidal solution of ThO/sub 2/). Glomerular capillary dilation was not due to fibrin deposition, since it occurred prior to and sometimes in the absence of fibrin deposits. It is suggested that glomerular capillary dilation is the factor responsible for localizing fibrin thrombi in the kidney during the generalized Shwartzman reaction. Thorotrast by itself is incapable of producing intravascular thrombosis and substituting for endotoxin as the provoking dose, and therefore is incapable of producing the generalized Shwartzman reaction. The reason for the difference in the action of Thorotrast as compared with endotoxin, which will both prepare and provoke, may be the inability of Thorotrast to induce in vivo intravascular coagulation. Thrombi are seldom seen in the spleen and liver after Thorotrast, whereas after endotoxin preparation they are common in these organs. (H.H.D.)
