ACTION OF HIGH DOSES OF PARATHYROID HORMONE ON THE LEVELS OF STRONTIUM AND CALCIUM IN BONE AND BLOOD SERUM A CONTRIBUTION TO THE MECHANISM OF ACTION OF PARATHYROID HORMONE

In rats containing skeletal deposits of Sr, treatment with 0.3 units parnthyroid hormone per g body wt produced only a slight rise in serum Sr levels, compared with the rise in Ca ievels. Hence, the hormone may not acceierate the removal of Sr from bone when it is given in physiologic doses. However, when it is given in doses of 1 to 2 units/g, it does cause a withdrawal of Sr from spongy and compact bones of rats. At these doses, serum Sr levels rise but serum Ca falls. The results were interpreted on the basis of the postulated mechanism of action of parathyroid hormone. By causing the accumulation of citric acid, which forms a soluble complex with Sr/sup ++/ that is only slightly reabsorbed by the renal tubules, the elimination of Sr from the body is accelerated.
