THE PRODUCTION OF SUBSTANCES WITH HIGH INACTIVATION AND WITH A PROTECTIVE EFFECT AGAINST DIRECT IRRADIATION IN AGAR BY X-RAYS, ALPHA RAYS AND ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT

Thesis/Dissertation ·
OSTI ID:4737372
Irradiation of agar by x rays, alpha rays, or ultraviolet light produces inactivation substances in the agar. This can be demonstrated by culturing bacteria e.g., B. Coli. The mean life time of these substances has a value between 7 and 20 sec. They are produced by at least two elementary processes. The substances produced by x rays have a molecular weight that is smaller than 200. Alpharay produced substances inactivate at least by a factor of 30 more than x-ray produced substances. Irradiation of B. Coli cultured on previously irradiated agar results in an antagonism between the direct irradiation and the substances in the agar. A protective action takes place only when the substances produced in the agar have diffused into the B. Coli cells before the direct irradiation. They have a protective effect only for a limited time of 30--60 sec. (Gmelin Inst)
