ABS>During the past years it was found that mu -mesons, the mass of which is about 200 times larger than that of electrons, possess properties similar to those of electrons and thus may attach themselves to electron orbits, forming mesoatoms and mesomolecules of the various elements. The mean life of these systems is only of the order of 2.2 x 10/sup -6/ sec. Gaseous mesocompounds of H and D were investigated. using mu and rature of the d - meson beams generated by the 680Mev proton beam of the Dubna synchrocyclotron. The experiments were carried out in a 7000-oersted magnetic field and involved the examination of 200,000 stereophotographs by means of a measuring microscope. The transition probability of the mu -mesons from proton to deuteron and the probability of the formation of pp mu mesomolecules were investigated together with the catalysis of the d + d and p + d nuclear reactions. The scattering of mu -mesoatoms on protons was investigated for the first time. ft was found that the large probability of the transition of mu -mesons from protons to nuclei with Z> 2 is due to the interception of the mesomolecular terms in the pZ mu system; subsequent cascade transitions of mesoatoms to the ground state with nearly 100% probability are accompanied by the emission of Auger electrons with energies of several kev.
