The production and decay of a ΛB12 hyperfragment
A K--p interaction in an emulsion produces a SIGMA- hyperon and a π+ meson. The SIGMA- is captured at rest by a C12 nucleus, producing LAMBDAB12 + n. The hyperfragment undergoes the decay LAMBDAB12 yields 3 α + π-. The kinematics of the produc tion and decay yield a binding energy for the LAMBDA hyperon in the hyperfragment of 11.2 plus or minus 0.8 Mev. The techniques used in determining that the hyperfragment is LAMBDAB12, and the criteria for discarding the possible LAMBDA /B13 identity, are outlined.
