OBSERVATION OF A DOUBLE HYPERFRAGMENT

A hyperon ( XI /sup -/ emitted in the interaction of a 1.5-Bev/c meson (K/sup -/) in emulsion was noted to have been absorbed with the production of a double hyperfragment. The ranges and angles involved in these and the subsequent decay processes are given. Analysis of the ordinary hyperfragment (subsequently emitted) showed the XI /sup -/ was captured on a light nucleus (C,N,0). Binding energies of the two DELTA /sup 0/ hyperons in the double hyperfragment and the DELTA /sup 0/ in the ordinary hyperfragment were determined. /sub LAMBDA LAMBDA / Be/sup 10-11/ was probably formed by XI capture on carbon.
