DISINTEGRATION OF THE C$sup 12$ NUCLEUS INTO THREE /cap alpha/-PARTICLES AS A RESULT OF INELASTIC SCATTERING OF 80 Mev $pi$$sup +$-MESONS (in Russian)

The disintegration of the C/sup 12/ nucleus into three alpha particies as a result of inelastic scattering of 80-Mev pi /sup +/ mesons is studied by the photographic emulsion technique. Excitation of C/sup 12/ nuclei to the 9.63- Mev level is found to contribute considerably to the cross section of the reaction ( approximates 20%). From the observed angular correlation of the decay products it is concluded that the spin of this level exceeds 1. The experimental data on the energy distribution of the alpha particles can be explained by assuming simultaneous breakup of the C/sup 12 nucleus into three alpha particles with resonance interaction between the particies in the final state.
