Growth of Beryllia Single Crystals

Single crystals of beryllia were grown by two methods. The transpiration method of crystal growth, which depends on the reversible reaction BeO + H2O in equilibrium Be(OH)2, yielded small perfect crystals suitable for limited study. Production of large crystals was hampered by severe polynucleation, which probably was caused by uncontrolled impurities. By the flux method crystals were precipitated from molten lithium molybdate saturated with dissolved BeO. Crystals up to 5 mm were grown. Growth of good-quality crystals in larger sizes was complicated by the formation of internal voids, possibly due to impurity interferences at growth steps, and by dense crystal nucleation. Characteristics and some problems of the two methods are discussed, and the crystals produced are described.
