The influence of boron in the growth of BeO single crystals from lithium molybdate flux was studied. The concentration of LiBO2 was varied from 0.05 to 5 wt% of the MoO3 flux component. Throughout this entire range, the crystal habit and characteristics of growth in the negative and positive polar directions were considerably modified. The supersaturation level required for crystal nucleation and significant growth rate was markedly reduced. The boron was found to enter the crystal lattice, without detectably altering lattice constants, and, in some cases, to introduce a distinctive reduction in crystal symmetry.
