FURTHER OBSERVATIONS ON GRAFT-VERSUS-GRAFT IMMUNOLOGICAL TOLERANCE IN RADIATION CHIMAERAS

Bone marrow cells injected into lethally irradiated mice were immunologically active against a second, marked, target inoculum of foreign fetal liver cells, while fetal liver cells under similar circumstances were not. The target cell population was completely eliminnted by the bone marrow cells within 5 to 6 weeks, and it is suggested thnt probably the elimination occurred within the first few days. The failure of fetal liver cells to react against the target inoculum may be attributed to specific immunological tolerance towards the target antigens. Observntions, made on the interactions between two grafts, throw light on the situation in allogeneic radiation chimeras where the target is the body of the host. Support is provided for the view that the decreased incidence of secondary disease in mice treated with foreign fetal (as opposed to adult) hematopoietic tissue is due to avoidance of the graft-versus-host immune reaction.
