Title: AUTOLOGOUS BONE MARROW INFUSIONS AND SHIELDING AS PROTECTIVE AGENT AGAINST LETHAL TOTAL-BODY IRRADIATION IN THE DOG

Journal Article · · Annals of Surgery (U.S.)

Successful results are reported on the protection of dogs against 480-r doses of x rays with fresh autologous marrow, stored autologous marrow, and shielding the hind limbs. All control dogs died 6 to 18 days alter receiving 480- r whole-body irradiation, with a mean survival time of 12.6 days. All of the dogs showed extensive hemorrhagic pneumonitis, but none had gastrointestinal ulceration or perforation at autopsy. Six of 8 dogs in which one hind leg was shielded with lead died 8 to 18 days following irradiation. Two were alive and well 50 and 75 days later, respectively. Four dogs in which both hind legs were shielded with lead were alive after 45 days, but rib biopsies revealed hypocellular marrow. Of 30 dogs given autologous bone marrow immediately alter receiving 480-r whole-body irradiation, 11 survived 45 days or longer and the remaining dogs are alive and well 8 to 22 months later. Hemoglobin, leukocyte, differential, and platelet counts all returned to normal within 2 months, and leukocyte and platelet counts returned to normal values within 3 weeks. There were no survivors in 17 dogs receiving less than 2 billion marrow cells, but all 7 dogs receiving more than 3 billion cells survived. Of 7 dogs receiving between 2 and 3 billion cells, 5 survived. (TCO)
