CONTRIBUTION TO THE IDENTIFICATION OF THE SPLEEN FACTOR PROTECTIVE AGAINST THE RADIATION SYNDROME

Attempts were made to elucidate the nature of the heatlabile protective factor in spleen homogenate by experiments in mice. Spleen homogenates were dialyzed at 4 deg C against physiologic saline solution for various periods and under various conditions and were then injected into lethally (1000 r) irradiated mice. Whereas whole spleen homogenate (equivalent to one spleen) reduced the 10- day mortality rate by 50%, various dialyzed fractions afforded only slight protection. The dialysis fluid, after concentration by redialysis against polyvinylpyrrolidone, conferred no protection. Similar changes were noted with respect to 15-day mortality. The inactivation of the radioprotective factor in spleen by dialysis and heat suggests that it may be a low molecular weight protein or peptide. (H.H.D.)
