URINARY EXCRETION OF $sup 32$P AND DESOXYRIBOSE IN RATS FOLLOWING IRRADIATION OR ADMINISTRATION OF A SINGLE DOSE OF METHIONINE SULPHOXIMINE

Journal Article · · Intern. J. Radiation Biol.
OSTI ID:4717036
The urinary excretion of P/sup 32/ was investigated in rats following the intraperitoneal administration of a single dose of 50 mg and 150 mg L- methionine sulfoximine, and compared with the effect of x radiation, the administration of 2,4-dinitrophenol, and scalding of 50 per cent of the body surface. After the administration of a single dose of methionine sulfoximine, the excretion of P/sup 32/ in the urine rises, depending on the amount administered. The effect of methionine sulfoximine and radiation of the urinary excretion of P/sup 32/ is similar. A similar effect is observed after administration of 2,4-dinitrophenol, but scalding has the reverse effect, i.e., the excretion of P/sup 32/ is reduced as compared with controls. After the administration of methionine sulfoximine, as after irradiation there is an increased excretion of Dische-positive substances, i.e., of urinary desoxyribose in rats. The increased urinary excretion of P/sup 32/ and desoxyribose in rats may be due to a disorder in the mechanism of oxidative phosphorylation. (auth)
