THE EFFECT OF X-RADIATION ON THE EXCRETION OF RADIOACTIVE PHOSPHORUS BY THE URINE IN RATS

The effect of x radiation on the excretion of radioactive phosphorus (P/ sup 3/) in the urine of rats was followed. Radioactive phosphorus was applied intraperitoneally within half an hour after irradiation, and its excretion was followed at intervals of 6, 12, 24, 48, and 72 hours after irradiation with doses of 10, 25, 50, 100, and 600 r. In addition, the effect of starvation, scalding, and administration of 2,4dinitrophenol on the excretion of P/sup 32/ in the urine of rats, was under investigation. It was found that: doses of 10 and 25 r lower the level of radioactive P/sup 32/ in the urine of rats, as compared with a control group; from the dose of 50 r there occurs a significant rise in the excretion of radioactive phosphorus in the urine of rats; at the dose of 100 r this rise is still more accentuated; the amount of excreted radioactive phosphorus is a function of radiation dose, the dose of 50 r being the dose from which the mentioned effect is observed; after doses of 100 and 600 r there is a oneorder difference between the amount of radioactive phosphorus excreted by irradiated animals and that, observe in control animals; the factor of starvation increases the excretion of labeled phosphorus by the urine of experimental as well as control animals as compared with fed rats, but there remains still a significant difference between the values obtained in irradiated animals and those observed in control animals; severe scalding produces a contrary effect, i.e., it lowers the excretion of radioactive phosphorus in the urine in comparison with control animals; following administration of 2,4-dinitrophenol, excretion of P/sup 32/ is increased in the same way as after irradiation. The increased excretion of radioactive phosphorus by the urine of rats after irradiation with x rays, as well as after the administration of 2,4-dinitrophenol is explained as disturbance of oxidative phosphorylation.
