White mice, 48 hr after intravenous injection of 20 mg of ethyl stearate, were exposed to whole-body x irradiation at 590, 650, and 750 r. The survival after 30 days showed a significant variation between the treated and untreated mice, irradiated with 650 r. The survival rate increased from 23 to 68%. No protective effect was found for the mice exposed to 750 r. At 590 r, the survival rate increased from 50 to 75%. The significance of these results is discussed with respect to the role of the RES activity. (J.S.R.)
