THE INFLUENCE OF EXTERNAL IRRADIATION ON THE DENSITY OF THE BLOOD SERUM IN RATS

Journal Article · · Physiologia Bohemoslovaca (Czechoslovakia)
OSTI ID:4714963
Serum density changes were investigated in rats exposed to 600-r, whole- body x irradiation, and compared with those in rats with skin burns and in dehydrated rats. Serum density rose after irradiation, to a maximum of 1.0273 at the 6th hr, from an initial value of 1.0244. The density was still elevated 48 hr postirradiation. The results were obtained with serum stored at 4 un. Concent 85% C for 24 hr after collection of blood. Less pronounced changes were obtained with fresh serum or serum incubated at 37 un. Concent 85% . Serum did not show a similar change in density after burns or dehydration, indicating that nonspecific stress after irradiation was not responsible for the change. It is suggested that the rise in density caused by irradiation may be due to some substance released by irradiated tissues into blood, possibly DNA or RNA constituents. (H.H.D.)
