ACTION OF X RAYS ON BILIRUBIN AND BELIVERDIN IN A PROTEIN MEDIUM (in French)

Journal Article · · Arch. Intern. Pharmacodyn.
OSTI ID:4713171
The nature of the complex between bile pigments and serum albumin was investigated by irradiating the pigments in the presence of proteins. Bilirubin and biliverdin were dissolved in canine plasma or in soiutions of bovine serum albumin or human gamma -globulin in pH 7.35 phosphate buffer. Two-ml volumes of the samples were irradiated with soft x rays (50 kv) at a rate of 236 r/sec to doses up to 300 kr. Based on percentage recovery of the pigments after irradiation, the protein showed a radioprotective effect, particularly at doses below 100 kr. In the presence of 4% albumin over 90% of bilirubin was recoverable after 100 kr, in contrast to less than l5% in the absence of protein. The action of albumin was not attributable to its sulfhydryl groups, since blocking the groups with Hg did not eliminate its radioprotective effect. gamma -Globulin, which does not bind bilirubin, did not prevent its radiolysis. Biliverdin was equally protected by albumin. (H.H.D.)
