PROTECTION AGAINST LETHAL EFFECTS OF INTESTINAL RADIATION BY SURGICAL ISOLATION OF THE IRRADIATED SEGMENT

A segment of small intestine of rats was exteriorized and irradiated with the rest of the body shielded. Irradiation of 50% of the ileum with 2000 r produced an acute intestinal syndrome with a mortality of 100% when the irradiated segment was left in continuity with the rest of the gut. When the irradiated segment was surgically isolated from the rest of the intestine by double ileostomy, the syndrome did not develop. Therefore, the harmful effect of segmental gut irradiation is dependent on the irradiated segment being in continuity with the rest of the intestine. This indicates that a radiotoxin of tissue origin is not important to the pathogenesis of the intestinai syndrome, and that the physical denudation of the ileal mucosa is not sufficient by itseif to cause the syndrome. It is suggested that the outpouring of fluid may be due to atony of the injured segment or to some property of the intestinal content acting on the denuded surface. (H.H.D.)
