A hollow fuel element, which is formed from two blindended tubes internally braced by a sleeve member, is patented. The sleeve member is a Zr tube with an external screw thread, which engages internal screw threads inside the hollow fuel tubes. The sleeve is inserted in the tubes before they are welded together and assists in joining as well as bracing them. In an alternative design, the fuel tubes are shrunk onto the Zr sleeve before welding instead of being screwed on. (M.P.G.)
