IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO REMOTE HANDLING TONGS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4712651
The design of remote-handling tongs to engage the end of a rod-like article is patented. The tong consists of a pivoted hand grip, a rod connected to and axially movable by the hand grip, a hollow shaft, a sleeve attached to the operative end of the shaft, a sliding member within the sleeve, and 2 bell crank levers pivoted on the sliding member. A first axial movement of the rod causes the levers to engage the end of a rod-like article. Further axial movement of the rod retracts the sliding member into the sleeve until a shoulder on the article abuts the end of the sleeve. This holds the rod-like article, such as a radiation source tube, rigid and in axial alignment with the tong handle. (M.P.G.)
