A process for the fluid-tight closure of reactor fuel elements sheathed with fritted materials is patented. A concave plug is placed inside the end of the sheath. A flash weld is made simultaneously between the plug, sheath, and a member overlying adjacent ends of the sheath and plug. The member is then removed by machining. The plug may either be threaded and screwed into the sheath before welding or tapered and driven into the sheath before welding. (M. P.G.)
