A reactor fuel element enclosed in a very thin-walled sheath with end caps welded to the sheath is patented. The end caps are fitted into the sheath before welding by an interference fit created by a taper on the end caps. The taper is preferably 0.005 in./in. of end cap length. The end caps are curved at their bases to provide ease of entry into the sheath. (M.P.G.)
