The design of a metallically sheathed reactor fuel element with improved heat-transfer characteristics between the fuel and the sheath is patented. The cylindrical fuel segments are slotted along their length to their center before sheathing. The void is filled with a compressible medium such as a gas that is inert towards the fuel. The fuel segments may have a slight interference fit with the sheath. The slotting gives radial elasticity to the fuel section, easing the pressure of the fuel against the sheath as the fuel expands.
