FLUORINATION AND OXIDATION OF URANIUM TETRAFLUORIDE TO URANIUM HEXAFLUORIDE BY PERCHLORYL FLUORIDE

When UF/sub 4/ is contacted with ClO/sub 3/F at elevated temperatures under anhydrous conditions in the absence of an added source of O, the UF/sub 4/ is converted by a combination of fluorination and oxidation reactions to a mixture of UF/sub 6/, UO/sub 2/F/sub 2/, and Cl/sub 2/. The UF/sub 6/ and Cl are readily separated as volatile materials from the UO/sub 2/F/sub 2/, and the Cl is easily separated from the UF/sub 6/, which forms a sublimate.
