STUDY OF CONTROLLED FLUORINATION ON INTERMEDIATE URANIUM FLUORIDES. Etude de fluoration menagee sur les fluorures intermediares d'uranium (in French)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4715849

The reaction UF{sub 4}+ClO{sub 3}F was studied by different methods in a temperature range between 240 deg and 310 deg. If a preliminary fluorination of UF{sub 4} to UF{sub x} takes place, the observed production of gaseous UF{sub 6} is probably not due solely to a later fluorination of UF{sub x} to UF{sub 6} by ClO{sub 3}F. In fact the intermediate formation of a uranium oxyfluoride is observed and this, on heating, itself cracks to give UF{sub 6} and uranyl fluoride. Our results tally better with the formula U{sub 2}O{sub 2}F{sub 7} also written (UO{sub 2}F{sub 2}, UF{sub 5}), than with the formula UO{sub 0.5}F{sub 4} proposed by KIRSLIS for a compound the same as or very similar to ours. No UF{sub 5-ClO{sub 3}F reaction takes place in the region 0 - 130 deg C. The reaction UF{sub 4}-F{sub 2}O studied between 175 and 250 deg C leads to approximately the same type of fluorination then oxyfluorination of UF{sub 4} as the reaction UF{sub 4}-ClO{sub 3}F. In particular the intermediate solid compound and the final residue are the same. There is no UF{sub 5}-F{sub 2}O reaction in the range 0 - 130 deg C. The crystallographic structure of the uranium oxyfluoride described would show similarities with that of uranyl fluoride in which the substitution of O{sup -} by F{sup -} ions would correspond to a slight variation in the distances between the planes perpendicular to the C axis, and a lowered hexagonal symmetry.
