Uranium hexafluoride has been reported to form a compound 3 NaF- UF/sub 6/ with sodium fluoride. The fluorine exchange between UF/sub 6/ and NaF was undertaken to further investigate the nature of this addition compound. With the radioactive fluorine F/sup 18/ in either the NaF or UF/sub 6/, exchange experiments indicate complete exchange for a compound of the composition 2 NaF - UF/sub 6/. In some experiments with more than one mole of UF/sub 6/ for three moles of NaF all the UF/sub 6/ was absorbed, and the extent of exchange indicated the compound 2 NaF- UF/sub 6/ was formed. Essentially no exchange occurs when gaseous UF/sub 6/ is passed through NaF/sup 18/ at temperatures above which the solid addition compound forms. No compound was formed, and essentially no exchange occurred, between UF/sub 6/ and LiF, KF, ZrF/sub 4/, and AgF. No compound was identified in the case of CaF/sub 2/, but a significant amount of exchange was noted.
